The Art of Fashion with Xiang Li’s wearable art: A Captivating Evening at ValleyCAST

On Thursday, September 5th, the ValleyCast Heritage Gallery (Heritage Gallery, 50 Douglas Road, Whitinsville, MA) was transformed into a vibrant hub of creativity, fashion, and style for the opening reception the highly anticipated exhibit, “The Art of Fashion.” This unique event seamlessly blended the worlds of fine art, textile design and fashion, that celebrated artistic expression in its many forms. The gallery is exhibiting the works of 5 local textile artists and designers, including artist Xiang Li. The event was organized by Cristi Collari, the curator of ValleyCast Heritage Gallery.
A Night of Artistic Brilliance
As I walked into the exhibit, I was immediately struck by the well-designed gallery space. The gallery space is very compact but neatly designed to showcase the works of 5 artists. Xiang Li’s work, known for its intricate details and bold use of color, was on full display. This one large watercolor-on-silk painting tells the story of different Song Dynasty Empresses (960-1279), inviting viewers to delve deeper into the artist’s vision. The atmosphere was electric, with art enthusiasts and fashion aficionados mingling and sharing their admiration for the works on display.
Fashion Meets Art
One of the highlights of the evening was the live fashion show, where Xiang Li’s family & friends showcased Xiang Li’s latest collection of artwear. The showcased artwear included dresses, unisex tops and sweatshirts, skirts, scarves, and hand bags inspired by Xiang Li’s watercolor paintings. The designs on the garments feature printable versions of the artist’s stunning paintings, a testament to the seamless fusion of art and fashion. Each piece is a wearable masterpiece, combining intricate patterns and vibrant hues that echo the theme of the exhibit. The models moved gracefully through the space, bringing the art to life in a way that was both captivating and inspiring.
Interactive Experiences
The exhibit also featured a range of interactive elements that engaged attendees on a deeper level. One of the standout experiences was the opportunity to try on pieces from the art wear collection. As I slipped into one of Xiang Li’s designs, I felt a profound connection to the art and the artist.

Catching up with Xiang Li at the event
One of the most memorable moments of the evening was my interaction with Xiang Li herself. As a fellow creative professional, I have been deeply inspired by her passion and dedication to her craft. We got the opportunity to discuss her artistic process again, the inspiration behind her latest collection, and the importance of merging art with fashion. Her insights are always so enlightening and motivating, leaving me with a renewed sense of purpose in my own creative endeavors.
In addition to interacting with her audience, Xiang Li also found the opportunity to play with Cristi’s dog during the event. Did you know that Xiang Li loves to paint dogs and they feature in many of her paintings?

Throughout the evening, I captured numerous photos that encapsulated the essence of the event. From the intricate details of the art installation to the dynamic energy of the designers and the models, each image tells a story of its own.
