Xiang Li Joins the Cambridge Science Festival – Exploring the Fusion of Traditional Art and Technology

On September 24, 2024, the Cambridge Public Library’s Central Square Branch was abuzz with excitement as renowned artist Xiang Li hosted an engaging event that beautifully blended traditional Chinese art with cutting-edge AI technology. This unique event was part of the Cambridge Science Festival, a celebration of innovation and creativity.

Fusion of Traditional Art and AI
Xiang Li, a master artist from the Forbidden City of Beijing, China, brought her exquisite skills and deep cultural heritage to the heart of Cambridge. Known for her intricate watercolor paintings on silk. Her work often features themes from ancient Chinese history and mythology, and they are testament to the rich traditions of Chinese culture, and her latest event at the Cambridge Library in Central Square was no exception.
Celebrating the Year of the Dragon
The event kicked off with a nod to the Year of the Dragon, with Xiang Li inviting participants to color their favorite Chinese dragon designs. This interactive activity was a hit among attendees of all ages, providing a hands-on experience with traditional Chinese art forms.
AI Meets Art
The highlight of the evening was the exploration of AI art creation. Participants had the opportunity to experiment with AI tools like DALL-E from OpenAI and Adobe Express. Adam Leffert (co-founder of PodIntelligence) led this session by giving a demo of how to use AI tools to create AI versions of Xiang Li’s paintings which opened up the discussion about exploring other forms of creativity inspired by these AI tools.
As part of Adam’s presentation, he compared the creation of AI images inspired by Xiang Li’s original watercolor art.

A Community of Learners
The event was designed to be inclusive and educational, encouraging questions and fostering a sense of community among participants. Whether you were an experienced artist or a curious beginner, there was something for everyone to learn and enjoy. The supportive environment made it easy for attendees to explore new techniques and push the boundaries of their artistic abilities.
We were pleasantly surprised by how many people who chose to spend their Tuesday evening with us. Delighted by the experience, we look forward to joining the festival again in the future.
