Sui (581 – 618) – The short‑lived Sui reunified China and dug the Grand Canal. Empress Dugu Qieluo, beloved wife of founder Yang Jian, was famed for curbing his concubine intake and co‑signing edicts, projecting an image of moral co‑rule. Her influence continued under their son, where Empress Xiao advised (but could not restrain) Emperor Yang’s extravagance—illustrating both the reach and limits of empressly counsel.
