Dugu Qieluo (544–602), also known as Empress Wenxian, was the wife of Emperor Wen, the founder of the Sui dynasty. A daughter of General Dugu Xin, she married Yang Jian in 557. Their monogamous marriage was rare, and she bore all ten of his children.

As empress, she was highly influential, advising Emperor Wen and earning the title “Two Holy Ones” with him. Known for her frugality, she played a key role in imperial succession, replacing their eldest son with Yang Guang, later Emperor Yang. Her life inspired TV series like The Legend of Dugu and Queen Dugu.

Emperor Wen of Sui (541–604 CE), born Yang Jian, was the founder of the Sui dynasty and one of China’s most effective rulers. Rising from a general of the Northern Zhou, he unified north and south China in 589 CE after centuries of division, establishing a strong centralized government. His reign emphasized frugality, stability, and reform—he streamlined laws, reduced taxes, promoted Buddhism alongside Confucian governance, and expanded the civil service system to favor talent over aristocratic privilege.
