Shi Xiangyun is a fictional character in the classic Chinese novel Dream of the Red Chamber. She is the younger second cousin of Jia Baoyu and the favorite grandniece of the Dowager, Baoyu’s grandmother.

Xiangyun is a beautiful and intelligent young woman who is also known for her wit and sense of humor. She is often at odds with her cousin Baoyu, but the two eventually develop a deep friendship.

Xiangyun is a tragic figure, however, as she is ultimately unable to find happiness in her life. She dies young, leaving behind a legacy of beauty, intelligence, and wit.

She was orphaned at a young age and grew up with her wealthy aunt and uncle in Jinling. They treated her poorly, making her work late into the night on embroidery and needlework. Despite her misfortune, Xiangyun was always cheerful and quick to make a joke. Her open heart and forgiving nature made her pranks endearing to most. She was also an excellent seamstress and spoke her mind without regard for tact. She wore a golden qilin around her neck.

Xiangyun was a tomboyish girl who did not conform to the refined expectations of a feudal lady. She looked good in men’s clothes and loved to drink and eat meat. Her androgynous beauty made her a popular visitor among her cousins, who often begged the Dowager to send for her. Xiangyun was a kind and generous person, and her company was always welcome.

Like all the Jia women, Xiangyun was well-educated. She was almost as good a poet as Daiyu or Baochai, and she was a member of the Crab Flower Club, which was founded by Tanchun and Daiyu.

One of the more memorable scenes in the book (in Chapter 62) has Shi Xiangyun going tipsy and falling asleep amongst the flowers on a stone bench in the Prospect Garden, surrounded by butterflies, with her fan half-buried in scattered petals. This scene is depicted in many artworks featuring the novel’s characters.
